Ever changing, untouched landscapes in the green of winding valleys make Umbria a region that will never fail to amaze.
This region comprises mainly hills, mountains, hollows and plains and extends along the Tiber’s central basin. At the heart of the boot, it is the only region with no coastline.
Day 1 Italy/Rome - Orvieto - Perugia
Arrival in Italy. After arrival we drive with a local touring car to Orvieto, a beautiful Etruscan city, perfectly located on a 300 meter high rock made of volcanic tuff. We make time for lunch and discover the city center with the amazing Duomo and former palaces. Further on to Perugia where we take residence in our hotel ****. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2 Perugia
Today we enjoy a calm day and we have a detailed visit to Perugia, the old Etruscan city and now the capital of Umbria. Walk through the historical center with its piazza, high Medieval buildings and numerous narrow streets. After our lunch we enjoy some free time in this wonderful city.
Day 3 Perugia – Assisi – Perugia
After our breakfast we have an elaborated visit to Assisi, the sanctuary situated on the flanks of the Monte Subasio. Walk through the old part of Assisi with the Basilica of St. Clara with crucifix, the Piazza del Comune with the medieval center and the double complex basilica of St. Francis with the beautiful frescos of Giotto and Cimabue and the tomb of St. Francis. After lunch we proceed to Santa Maria degli Angeli for a visit to the basilica with the Portiuncula chapel and the place where St. Francis passed away. Back to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4 Perugia – Norcia – Castelluccio - Perugia
Today we have a day full of nature on the program and we move towards Norcia and the mountains. Via the wide Valle Umbra we drive to the medieval village Vallo di Nera with small stairway streets and panoramic views. Further on to Norcia: this walled city with a splendid historical center is famous for its Pecorino cheese, sausage and salami. After our traditional lunch we drive to the Sybilline mountains up unto a height of 1300 meter. Via the resort Castelluccio we reach the Piano Grande, a wide plateau where we gain a magnificent view. Via the Piano Perduto we go back to our hotel in Perugia. Dinner and overnight stay in our hotel.
Day 5 Perugia – Spello – Todi - Perugia
After our breakfast we visit Spello, an old Roman city. The center with its Santa Maria Maggiore and the former Roman gates seem abandoned but unique. We continue to Todi for lunch. In the afternoon we visit Todi, implanted high in the hills. The center with its unfinished St. Francis church shelters a central square that used to serve as Forum for the Romans. There we can admire the cathedral and the town hall. Back to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6 Perugia – Trasimeno – Spoleto – Perugia
After our breakfast we drive to the lake of Trasimeno situated at the border of Tuscany. We drive through a spectacular environment with a view onto the islands on the lake. We drive further to Spoleto; many see this city as the most beautiful of Umbria. This city used to be a Roman settlement and the remains of the old ramparts (6th century B.C.) are still visible. It’s also one of the oldest settlements of Umbria, proven by 3000 year old archeological discoveries. The cityscape is dominated by the cathedral, the cathedral square and the roman churches. We will visit the Roman Duomo Santa Maria Assunta that has a façade with eight impressive window rosettes. Return to the residence hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7 Perugia – Rome
After our breakfast buffet we move towards Rome where we visit the impressive historical center. We take our lunch here. We end our trip with a visit to the Vatican where we admire the St. Peter’s Basilica and the remarkable square. In the late afternoon we drive to the airport for our flight home. End of our services.
