GREECE ‘Peloponnese, cradle of our civilization’ 8 days / 7 nights

The cultural richness and natural beauty of the Peloponnese can hardly be overstated. This southern peninsula – technically an island since the cutting of the Corinth Canal – seems to have the best of almost everything Greek!

Program

Day 1 Athens - Tolo
In Athens you will be awaited by our guide and a luxury touring car that will take us via the Corinth Canal to our residence hotel in Tolo. Dinner and overnight stay in hotel ****.

Day 2 Tolo – Arcadia – Dimitsána – Vytina -Tolo
After breakfast, we commence our tour in the unspoiled countryside of Arcadia. Our first stop is the gulch of Lousios. This gulch stretches over 5 km and is almost 300 meters deep in the narrowest and most spectacular part. On the way to Dimitsána, situated on the ancient city Teuthis, we first visit a monastery. The modern Dimitsána stands out with its picturesque alleys with mansions up to 5 stories. After lunch we leave for our last stop of the day, Vytina and then we head back to Tolo for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 Tolo – Mystras - Tolo
After breakfast we drive to Mystras, also called “Ghost City”, the center of Byzantine Peloponnese. The city expanded quickly under Byzantine governance. From 1350 to 1460 the residence was from a Byzantine regent: always the son or brother from the reigning emperor. The despots embellished the city with churches, monasteries and palaces. In the churches we can admire a lot of frescos. After we lunch we drive back to Tolo. Dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 4 Tolo – Hydra – Spetses - Tolo
After breakfast we leave for a day of island hopping. We depart from the harbor of Tolo and sail towards the isle of Hydra, in the Aegean Sea. Last years, the island has become a cosmopolitan art center. The 18th and 19th century mansions bear witness to the former wealth and grandeur. Also the beautiful monasteries and churches demand our attention. We have lunch here. Afterwards we hop back on the boat and continue to Spetses. Around the harbor we find a lot of canons. We stroll around the lighthouse and walk alongside pebbly beaches, beautiful houses, cozy harbors and pleasant plazas. Around the evening we head back to Tolo for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5 Tolo
Today we enjoy a free day and lunch in Tolo.
Dinner and overnight stay in our residence hotel in Tolo.

Day 6 Tolo – Epidaurus – Nauplion - Tolo
After breakfast we visit the theatre of Epidaurus, one of the best preserved theaters of Greece. It lies as a gigantic shell on the flanks of a hill and was built in the 4th century before Christ. Acoustics there are fantastic. Further on to Nauplion. The marble surfacing and the distinctive homogenous architecture makes Nauplion one of the most elegant cities of Greece. The urban landscape is mainly dominated by three impressive fortresses. We make a short walk through the first capital of Greece alongside the statues of Kapodistrias, King Otto I and the Lion of Bavaria. The coach takes us back to our residence hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7 Tolo – Mycenae – Tolo
We enjoy a lovely breakfast. We drive to the fortress of Mycenae. Mycenae was an important city in the ancient times. The impressive royal castle was solely inhabited by the ruling class. In particular the Lions Gate, the oldest known monumental sculpture of Europe, is world famous. More ancient than this fortress itself are the so called shaft graves where several death royal family members are buried. After lunch we drive back to Tolo for a free afternoon. Dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 8 Tolo – Athens
After our breakfast buffet we drive back to the Corinth Canal, constructed in the last decade from the 19th century, on the place where the isthmus is the narrowest. Since that time Peloponnese was no longer a peninsula but a genuine island. We continue to the center of Athens where we visit the symbol of the city: the Acropolis. We walk through the Plaka, the part of the city that has been paved as first after the independency, and alongside the presidential palace. In the afternoon we move towards the airport of Athens for our flight back.
End of our services.
